U.S. Botanic Garden Private Tour

1:30 p.m.
U.S. Botanic Garden
100 Maryland Avenue, S.W.
Washington, DC 20001
Metro: Southwest Federal Center, Capitol South stations; slightly farther: Union Station
Cost: $10 per adult, free for children under age 18
SOLD OUT! This event is fully subscribed. No more registrations can be accepted.
The club is pleased to announce that Bob Mowbray ’57, docent at the United States Botanic Garden, will lead a private tour of the garden for members of the Dartmouth Club.
Bob is a tropical forest ecologist who spent his career working on sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation, mostly in Latin America, with the Peace Corps and U.S. Agency for International Development.
The U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) is a garden overseen by the Congress of the United States and located on the Capitol grounds, near Garfield Circle. The building, which includes a large Lord & Burnham greenhouse, is divided into rooms, each simulating a different habitat. The garden traces its origins to 1816, when the Columbian Institute for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences proposed creation of a botanic garden to collect, grow, and distribute plants from the U.S. and other countries that might contribute to the welfare of the American people.
The garden was moved to its present location in 1933. It was closed for a major restoration from 1997 to 2001. The renovated conservatory offers citizens of Washington and visitors from across the nation a beautiful and fascinating living plant museum here on our nation’s mall at the foot of the U.S. Capitol.
Bob will meet the Dartmouth Club group that afternoon in the middle of the Garden Court, the room just past the visitor’s desk. He will have a name tag and will be wearing a USBG blue shirt with his name embroidered on it, over a black turtleneck shirt.
All proceeds will benefit the club’s Dartmouth College Scholarship Fund.
Questions can be addressed to Da’aga Hill Bowman ’79.
For more information about the garden, click here.

Real Dartmouth Pong Tournament
|
|
Saturday, February 20, 2010
1:00 p.m. until tournament is complete
Rhino Bar & Pumphouse
3295 M Street, N.W.
Washington, DC 20007
(202) 333-3150
The club’s Young Alumni are hosting our second annual pong tournament to benefit the club’s scholarship fund. It’s our opportunity to play Dartmouth-style pong, not that skill-less game everyone else thinks is “pong,” (i.e. Beirut).
All Dartmouth alumni, friends, and alumni of other colleges are invited.
Each year, our club provides financial assistance to three Dartmouth students from the D.C., area. In addition, we’re about twenty percent of the way toward endowing a fourth scholarship. In these turbulent times, financial support for students is particularly vital. Last year’s tourney raised over $1,300 for the scholarship fund, and we’re hoping to make the total higher this year.
The tournament: Two-person teams compete in Dartmouth-style pong.
Why: Because you love pong, love reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, and we can help some students/future alums in need while having a blast
Sign up on line: Reserve your spot in the tournament before February 5th by
clicking here.
Partner requests: If you have a partner, please include that person’s full name when you sign up on line. If you do not specify a partner, we’ll be happy to assign you one at random.
Time slots: To avoid confusion, participants will receive an assigned time slot for the first few rounds. You may specify a preferred time slot when signing up, but that cannot be guaranteed. We’ll accommodate as many of your requests as possible. However, please do keep this change from last year in mind. Time slots are (i) 1 - 2 p.m., (ii) 2 - 3 p.m., (iii) 3 - 4 p.m., (iv) 4 - 5 p.m.
Overview: Each team will play at least 1 game of 4-cup diamond during the first few rounds (i.e. during the 4 time slots). Depending on the final number of participants, these rounds will either be a single-elimination or round-robin format. Furthermore, there will be a playoff round of 7-cup shrub for the winners of each time slot beginning at 5 p.m. More details will be provided as we start to get a sense of how many participants will be entering the tournament.
Price: $30 to play in the tournament, which includes 3 hours of open bar (rail drinks and draft beer); $25 to attend (i.e. just hang out and enjoy the open bar). You will be able to purchase entrance at the door for $30 as an observer only. All tournament entrants must register on line. Tickets purchased on line are not refundable.
The $30 or $25 gets you into the party for three hours of unlimited rail drinks and draft beer. We can still hang out and play for as long as we want after the open bar closes, but we’ll have to pay for drinks after 4 p.m.; they’re not expensive. There will also be a drawing with great prizes. Details will be forthcoming.
Dress for a basement – all good; ...and bring friends Dartmouth and/or non-Dartmouth. We’ll show the non-Green how real pong is played.
If you have questions or are interested in volunteering to help during the event, please e-mail Young Alumni Co-Chairs Erin Demien or Julia Dempewolf.
We look forward to seeing you there, and please remember to make plans to get home safely.

4:00 p.m.
Imagination Stage
4908 Auburn Avenue
Bethesda, MD 20814

Join Barbara Rollins ’84 for a fresh imagining of this classic tale. The familiar musical story is expanded into a lively theatrical version, with bold movement and original songs. We meet the clever Peter and his friends, the starving Cat and the bickering Duck and Bird. Together they scheme to capture the Wolf and make the forest a safer place. But Wolf is a wily trickster and will stop at nothing to capture his prey. There are mad chases, mysterious appearances, high comedy, suspense and, of course, the brilliant music.

coach who has produced the longest winning streak in college sports history (224
consecutive wins) while struggling with a son who is a heroin addict. After
doing Trip to the Sea in 1991, James became interested in John Ledyard; in 2005,
his biography of Ledyard, American
Traveler, came out to wide and positive reviews, even from a certain
conservative College newspaper. Ledyard fled
Dartmouth College by canoe after his freshman year and pursued many adventures,
including a stint in the British Royal Navy ship Resolution on Captain James Cook's final voyage.
Drive time from
DC is estimated at 3 hours, from Baltimore and Raleigh it’s 4 hours, and
considerably less for members from the Central Virginia club or the Richmond area.

Young Alumni Tubestock and Beertasting
|
|
Saturday, August 14, 2010
All day
Shenandoah River
West Virginia
There will never be another tubestock in Hanover, but Urban Escapes has done just about everything possible to recreate
that amazing day in a safe and legal way. This event will consist of three hours of lazy river tubing on the Shenandoah River in
West Virginia, followed by a catered lunch and private tasting at one of our favorite local brew pubs.
While everyone connected with Dartmouth is welcome, this is an OVER-21 event.
Urban Escapes (founder Maia Josebachvili ’05, Boston directors Luke Antal ’07 and Adam Platz ’08, and D.C. director Dan Josebachvili ’09) has partnered with the Dartmouth Club of D.C. to relive the glory days of Sophomore Summer. We’ll get the morning started off right with a few games of WAH! and a whole mess of Dartmouth-inspired fun. Once we reach the river, we’ll be outfitted with our tubes and head to the drop-in point. From there it’s a relaxing three hour cruise down river where we’ll have a chance to show H-Po that even though they may be able to take our tubestock, they’ll never take our freedom. After we’re done tubing, we will reconvene on shore for a much needed lunch before heading to our favorite brew pub for a private tasting led by the brewmaster himself.
Whether you missed the real tubestock or just want a chance to relive that awesome day, Safe and Legal Tubestock is the event of the summer you won’t want to miss.
To attend, you must secure your spot through Urban Escapes’ website by clicking here
and then pay through the Dartmouth Club by clicking
here.
Cost: $65 for Dartmouth Club of D.C. members current on their dues and first guest of those members; $80 for all other Dartmouth alums and additional guests.
Included: transportation, three hours of tubing, catered lunch, beer tasting and tour, certified guides, general tomfoolery.
Bring: 2 liters of water, towel, change of dry clothes, bathing suit, appropriate river shoes (no flip flops), sunscreen, optional snacks.
Departure: 9:00 a.m. on the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Veazey Street–accessible from Van Ness Metro stop (Red Line).
Return: around 6:00 p.m. to the same place.
