Dartmouth at the National Gallery of Art: Picturing Pompeii
|
|
Saturday, January 10, 2009
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
National Gallery of Art
Washington, D.C.
Alumni Continuing Education recently
launched an exciting new educational program called Dartmouth on Location. It combines the thought-provoking content of a club
seminar with the built-in attraction of a local event.
In mid-October the National Gallery of Art opened an exhibit with an important Dartmouth connection. “Pompeii and the Roman Villa:
Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples” contains 150 works including one of the Hood Museum of Art's most prized possessions,
“The Sculpture Gallery” by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Hood Curator, T. Barton Thurber assisted the National Gallery by lending
his extensive knowledge of this work and designing a portion of the exhibit.
“Dartmouth on Location: Picturing Pompeii” will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
at the National Gallery of Art.
Arranged just for Dartmouth alumni and friends is early admission to the museum for a presentation by Hood Curator Thurber and viewing of the exhibit.
Cost to participate will be approximately $45 per person and includes the lecture, private viewing, and a brunch reception at the
Terrace Cafe in the National Gallery.
As you can imagine, there are many details involved. To assist us in planning you are encouraged to pre-register with no obligation.
Those who indicate their interest now will be notified first to confirm their registration.
To pre-register, please visit Alumni Continuing Education's website.

impress audiences with his stunning choir, amazing band and novel
programming.
Please join us for what will surely be an exuberant experience. The

Pong Tournament for Scholarship Fund
|
|
Saturday, February 7, 2009
1:00 p.m. until a winner emerges
Rhino Bar
3295 M Street N.W.
Wahington, D.C. 20007
(202) 333-3150
The club’s Young Alumni are hosting a $25 per person charity pong tournament
to benefit our Scholarship Fund. Beer and mixed drinks included. It’s our
opportunity to play Dartmouth-style pong, not that skill-less game everyone else
thinks is "pong," i.e. “Beirut.”
Real Dartmouth PONG. All Dartmouth alums and their friends are invited.
The Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C. annually provides financial assistance to
four D.C.-area students attending the College. Our aid helps reduce the work and
loan burdens of these outstanding yet financially needy students to help them
maximize their time spent at the College absorbing the rewards of a Dartmouth
College education. In these especially turbulent financial times, we would like
to raise additional funds to help ensure the Scholarship Fund’s sustainability
and impact. A pong benefit party seems a great way to have fun for a great
cause. With a strong turnout, a percentage of the entrance fee could raise over
$1000 for scholarships.
What: Two-person teams compete in a single/double elimination Dartmouth-style
pong tournament.
When: 1 p.m. ’til we’re done, Saturday, February 7th.
Where: We’ve got the upstairs at the Rhino Bar to ourselves.
Why: Because you love pong, love reconnecting with old friends and meeting new
ones, and we can help some students/future alums in need while having a blast.
Sign up on line. Reserve your spot in the tournament by sending an
e-mail with your name (and partner’s name if you have a partner,
though we can assign you a partner at random if you prefer). We will then
contact you with payment details. There will be an online bracket posted a week
before the tournament and you can choose which team you’d like to face off
against first.
Price: $25 for online registration as a player in the tournament; $20 for
online registration as an observer (ie to just hang out and party with
friends). Or you can register in person on February 7 for $30 (whether as a
player or observer). Best to sign up online beforehand to save money, choose
which team you get to face off against, and help make it a better organized
tournament.
The $20, $25, or $30 gets you into the party for three hours of open bar:
mixed drinks and beer. We can still hang and play for as long as we want after the
three-hour open bar, but we’ll have to pay for drinks after 4 p.m.; they’re not
expensive.
The tournament will last as long as it takes to get a winner (we’re thinking
3-5 hours). It’s single elimination, but there will also be a losers’
bracket, so each team will play at least two games. Dress for a basement
and bring friends Dartmouth- and/or non-Dartmouth-alum friends. We’ll show the non-Green how Real Pong is played.

Medicine in the Age of the Cyborg: multimedia presentation by neurosurgeon Zach Levine ’89
|
|
Thursday, February 26, 2009
The Chevy Chase Club
6100 Connecticut Avenue
Chevy Chase, Maryland 22209
“Resistance is Futile” is the mantra of the Borg, from Star Trek.
Science fiction mythology often involves machinery and its unnatural
union with humans. But can we resist the merger of man and machine
in the quest for a longer and more productive life? In our efforts
to treat disease and injury we have already begun this melding
process. For some patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease,
paralysis or chronic pain, implantable circuits in the brain and
spinal cord are used as effective medical therapy. How close are we
to making cyborgs? What lies ahead for the future of man and
machines in medicine? Come hear noted neurosurgeon Zachary Levine ’89 give
an exciting multimedia presentation about current medical therapy
using “neural-prosthetics” to treat neurological illness and injury.
More details on time, cost, and RSVP info coming soon!

Book talk with Ulrich Boser ’97, author of The Gardner Heist
|
|
Tuesday, April 21, 2009
7:00 p.m.
Free event
Sumner School
1201 17th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C.
Metro: Farragut North on the Red Line
The Dartmouth Club invites you to attend a
book signing for The Gardner Heist by Ulrich Boser ’97. The event
will be held at the Sumner School, just a few blocks from Dupont
Circle. Hors d’oeuvres and light refreshments will be served.
Boser’s book examines the largest art heist in history: the March
1990 theft of one Vermeer, three Rembrandts, and five Degas from the
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. While there have been
thousands of leads, hundreds of interviews, and a $5-million reward,
not a single painting has been recovered. Worth $500 million, the
missing masterpieces have become one of the nation’s most
extraordinary unsolved mysteries.
Traveling deep into the art underworld, Boser explores the heist and tells the
true story behind
the infamous theft. He also moves beyond the case to look generally
at how art is protected in museums and galleries as well as at how
law enforcement solves art crimes.
Ulrich Boser has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post,
Smithsonian, Slate, and many other publications. He has also served
as a contributing editor at U.S. News and World Report and is the
founding editor of The Open Case, a crime magazine and web community.
He graduated from Dartmouth with honors in 1997.

Book talk with Louisa Gilder ’00, author of The Age of Entanglement: When Quantum Physics Was Reborn
|
|
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
6:00 p.m.
Free event (with cash bar)
The University Club of Washington
1135 16th Street N.W.
Washington, D.C.
The Dartmouth Club and the University Club of Washington invite you to a book talk and signing for The Age of Entanglement -- When Quantum Physics Was Reborn by Louisa Gilder ’00. There will be a cash bar and light refreshments.
RSVP to Gene Marans via e-mail or phone (202) 266-3316.
Louisa’s book describes the history of a mysterious aspect of quantum physics called “entanglement.” The book has been the subject of favorable reviews in The New York Times, Nature, and The Washington Post, among other publications.
Following is a description of the book provided by the publisher.
A brilliantly original and richly illuminating exploration of entanglement, the seemingly telepathic communication between two separated particles—one of the funndamental concepts of quantum physics.
In 1935, in what would become the most cited of all of his papers, Albert Einstein showed that quantum mechanics predicted such a correlation, which he dubbed “spooky action at a distance.” In that same year, Erwin Schrödinger christened this spooky correlation “entanglement.” Yet its existence wasn’t firmly established until 1964, in a groundbreaking paper by the Irish physicist John Bell. What happened during those years and what has happened since to refine the understanding of this phenomenon is the fascinating story told here.
We move from a coffee shop in Zurich, where Einstein and Max von Laue discuss the madness of quantum theory, to a bar in Brazil, as David Bohm and Richard Feynman chat over cervejas. We travel to the campuses of American universities—from J. Robert Oppenheimer’s Berkeley to the Princetonn of Einstein and Bohm to Bell’s Stanford sabbatical—and we visit centers of European physics: Copenhagen, home to Bohr’s famous institute, and Munich, where Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli picnic on cheese and heady discussions of electron orbits.
Drawing on the papers, letters, and memoirs of the twentieth century’s greatest physicists, Louisa Gilder both humanizes and dramatizes the story by employing their own words in imagined face-to-face dialogues. Here are Bohr and Einstein clashing, and Heisenberg and Pauli deciding which mysteries to pursue. We see Schrödinger and Louis de Broglie pave the way for Bell, whose work is here given a long-overdue revisiting. And with his characteristic matter-of-fact eloquence, Richard Feynman challenges his contemporaries to make something of this entanglement.

Princeton/Dartmouth Small Potluck Dinners
|
|
Invitation from The Princeton Club of Washington.
The Princeton club is holding a series of small potluck dinners in the Washington D.C. area for Ivy alumni this fall, hosted by Princeton alumni in their homes. They have invited local Dartmouth alumni to participate in two dinners: one on October 3 and the next one on October 17.
The Princeton club leadership planned these events because they found that their alumni enjoy having some smaller, more personal events. The Princeton club held a series of similar dinners just for Princeton alumni last year which were very popular – all of the dinners were oversubscribed – and this year they are expanding the events to include other Ivy schools, including Dartmouth. If you are interested in a fine meal and great conversation, this is for you.
To sign up, you can reply to the host directly by email. Host names and e-mail links are posted on the Princeton club web site at the link in this paragraph and also farther down in this e-mail. For security reasons, you will receive their actual addresses once you register. For more information about the dinners, check this Princeton Club of Washington web page.
The dinners are potluck-style: the host will offer one dish, and participants will each bring a dish. The host will provide guidance on what dishes are needed, once you RSVP.
Saturday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. – Table for 8.
Hosted by Courtney Weiner ’01 in Washington D.C.

DOC’s Hike the Appalachian Trail in a Day
|
|
To celebrate the Dartmouth Outing Club’s 100th birthday this Saturday, October 10, more than 200 Dartmouth alumni and current students will attempt to collectively hike the entire length of the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail in a 24-hour period, with different groups covering point-to-point segments. If successful, it will be the first time such an attempt has been completed.
Elsewhere up and down the east coast, Dartmouth hikers include a 91-year-old member of the class of 1939, a member of the class of ’96 who is 7-1/2 months pregnant (along with her two year old child), and a former DOC president who is flying to North Carolina to hike a section of the trail he once maintained there. Members of the College’s current cross-country ski team are traveling to Maine to hike one of the most remote sections of the trail.
They are still short some hikers in points south of Roanoke, Virginia. If you can help out, please contact Athena Aicher ’11, one of the event’s coordinators, at (631) 275-3581 or by e-mail.
Click here to read more about “Hike the AT in a Day”.
Locally, the Dartmouth Club will be covering the Maryland section of the AT. The following details
are from Wayne Bardsley ’70 about the plans in our area this Saturday. It’s not too late to sign up.
Contact Wayne by e-mail.
For those hikers needing rides and those hikers/drivers able to transport people needing rides, please let
Wayne know where you will be coming from so he can pair up people.
The game plan is to have four groups and two starting points: one at Gathland State Park (Maryland) and one at Wolfsville Road near Smithsburg, Maryland. These two spots are at approximately 10 miles and 31 miles of our 41 mile segment. Two groups at each starting point, one hiking north and one hiking south. Each trail segment will be approximately 9 to 12 miles. A 5 mile option with minimal uphill hiking will also be available.
The three end points will be Interstate 70 by Greenbrier State Park at mile 19 (for two groups), the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, and Harpers Ferry.
Meet-up time will be 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at each start point with the hope that all car shuttles can be accomplished and hikers on the trail by 10:00 a.m.
Things to bring: water, day pack, rain jacket, water, trail food, extra socks/shirt, water, good humor, camera (each segment has good views).
Maps of the trail will be provided. More details will be coming Thursday
from Wayne.

Princeton/Dartmouth and Dartmouth-Only Small Potluck Dinners
|
|
Several Dartmouth alumni are interested in hosting small, informal potluck dinner parties in their homes for fellow alumni, similar to events organized by the Princeton Club of Washington D.C. The Princeton Club planned a series of similar dinners alumni last year because they found that their alumni enjoy having some smaller, more personal events. The events turned out to be very popular – all were oversubscribed – so now we are participating in some joint dinners with the Princeton Club. We also thought it would also be fun to do some Dartmouth-only dinners. If you are interested in a fine meal and great conversation, this is just right for you.
If you would enjoy hosting a group of Dartmouth alumni at your home for a dinner (in which the host would provide the main course and the guests would bring side dishes), please drop Meg Sommerfeld a line by e-mail and let her know your name, class year, when you could host (anytime between now and next spring), what town or city you live in, and how many people you could host. She will compile a list of interested hosts and try to schedule some dates in the coming months for these dinners.
In the meantime, there may still be a spot or two left in the joint Princeton/Dartmouth dinner scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m., at the home of Courtney Weiner, Princeton ’01, in Washington D.C. She can be reached by e-mail. For more information about the joint Princeton-Dartmouth dinner parties, please click here.

Alumni Career Networking Evening
|
|

East Tower Penthouse
1301 K Street, N.W.
Washington, DC 20005
Metro: Red (Farragut North), Orange and Blue (Farragut West and McPherson Square) Lines

RSVP with your name, class year, job title, company, and industry as soon as possible to
Matt Nicholson ’05.
Washington is known as a town for lobbying...now it’s time to lobby for your career.
Mix and mingle with fellow Big Green alums. Swap stories, share your interests and exchange connections over hors d’oeuvres and drinks from our cash bar.
Take home a few new strategies on how to manage and enhance your professional reputation through making a few smart moves to manage and
build your reputation online.
Chandlee Bryan, former Director of Career Services at Dartmouth’s Thayer School and Founder of
Best Fit Forward, a Manhattan-based
provider of Career Management services, will share best practices on why and how to use social media tools for
your career – from LinkedIn to Facebook and Twitter. Have you ever wondered how to use LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter not just to post
status updates or share photos, but to advance your career? Chandlee will share with us how to make the best use of
these sites – as well as what NOT to do.
Don’t think you need to attend? Consider this:
86 percent of executive recruiters are conducting background research online, and 44 percent of them have screened out potential employees based on what they found.
78 percent of small companies are using social-networking sites to support their recruitment efforts, and among these companies, 80 percent use LinkedIn most often.
While it took radio 50 years to reach an audience of 50 million, it took Facebook only two years to do so.
There are currently about 300 million Facebook users, 100 million of whom log into the site every day.
From stats and optimizing your LinkedIn profile (a must) to whether or not to friend your recruiter (don’t): it’s everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about social media.
If you have questions you would like Chandlee to answer at Career Networking Night, you can e-mail
them to her in advance. Or just post a question for her on our D.C. Club Facebook page or our LinkedIn page.
While there will be some talk, we’re also asking you to help us do what Dartmouth alums do best – network. Is it any surprise that a
recent survey by Payscale.com found that Dartmouth alums have the highest median salary of peer institutions ten years after graduation?
Following Chandlee’s talk, we’ll have a power networking event with ten key fields. We’ll gather by interest area to swap tips,
make connections and exchange information. Do you work in any of the following career sectors? Whether you are just starting out or a senior
professional, come represent your field.
Law
Government/Public Policy
Business and Consulting Services
Real Estate
Education
Media/Communications
Science/Healthcare
Technology
Nonprofit Sector
Environmental issues
We’re looking for a few facilitators for each discussion area – "go-to" contacts who can provide support for those interested in
making a full transition into a new sector. If you are willing to serve in this capacity as a Career Mentor on the evening of November 11,
please contact Matt Nicholson.
Also RSVP with your name, class year, job title, company, and industry to Matt if you are planning to attend the event as a general participant.

It was built in 1796 when Georgetown was well established from colonial times and the city of Washington merely comprised a vast construction site. A focal point for Georgetown elections and civic events, the City Tavern has associations with presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Adams. The building and its furnishings were restored in 1962 and present a fine example of the American Federal style. For views of the City Tavern click here.
Advance payment registration is $30. Registration by email, phone, or at the door is $35. To register and pay in advance, note your school on the check,

Serve Dinner to Military Families at Walter Reed’s Fisher House
|
|
Monday, November 30, 2009
5:00 p.m.
Fisher House
Walter Reed Hospital
6900 Georgia Avenue, N.W., Building 56
Washington, DC 20307
Volunteers are needed to make and serve dinner at Fisher House, a home for recovering soldiers and their families at Walter Reed Hospital. We have been assigned Monday evening, November 30, at 5:00 p.m.
Approximately 30 individuals live at the Fisher House while recovering from injuries or undergoing treatment for other illnesses, as well as family members there to support them. The residents very much enjoy the dinners and are grateful for the support. We need to prepare a casserole-type dinner, salad, bread and dessert for 30 people.
To do the following things, in advance, we need:
- Several people to make casserole dinners, to serve a total of 30 people
- Several people to make side dishes (rice, pasta, veggies, etc.)
- Several people to make salads, to serve a total of 30 people (bring dressing, too)
- Several people to make dessert to serve 30 (Serving utensils as well if required)
- One or two people to purchase napkins, plates, cups, drinks and plastic silverware for 30
If you can participate, please e-mail
event coordinator Kerensa Zimmerman ’92 and let her know what you would like to make in advance (if anything...volunteers who just come as servers and visitors are welcome as well, even if you can’t bring food).
We need to meet at the house no later than 5:00 p.m. so we are set up to serve dinner at 5:30 and hang out to speak with the residents afterwards. This promises to be a very rewarding experience.
If you are interested in participating, but cannot come this time, we will be doing this again soon.
Please e-mail Steph Lewin or
Meg Sommerfeld to let them know if you can come next time.
