Dartmouth-Washington Connections
White House
No Dartmouth Alums made it here as President, although some say Daniel Webster could have been elected, had he tried. As Vice President, Nelson A. Rockefeller 1930 has come closer than any alumnus to serving as the nation's top elected official.
Several US Presidents have received honorary degrees from Dartmouth over the years:
- John Adams – 1782 (in absentia)
- James Monroe – 1817 (first to visit Dartmouth)
- Franklin Pierce — 1860
- Woodrow Wilson — 1909
- Herbert Hoover — 1920
- Franklin Roosevelt — 1929
- Dwight Eisenhower — 1953
- Bill Clinton — 1995
