Alumni in the Schools Tutoring Program

Dartmouth, through its Alumni in the Schools program encourages alumni clubs across the country to get involved in public school education. Many clubs have, including our own.

The Dartmouth Club of Washington's effort focuses on a single school, Jefferson Junior High School, with tutoring conducted at the school on Saturday mornings from September through June.

We currently work with as many as 60 junior high school students, both boys & girls, and try to maintain a student to tutor ratio of two or three to one. Because of the transient nature of the Washington young adult community, we are always seeking new tutors. This is something every Dartmouth grad is uniquely equipped to do, and the need for your help is compelling.

Standardized testing scores in the District are consistently and substantially below the national average. Many students have never had the opportunity for one-on-one help or had a chance to learn in small groups. Our assistance is needed in virtually every subject, particularly reading, writing, and math. Special skills such as foreign languages and the sciences are particularly welcome.

Those who have tutored have found the experience both interesting and rewarding; an education for the tutors as well as for the students. The program, for the most part, is conducted at a fairly basic level with the emphasis on reading, writing, and basic math skills. All that is needed is a little free time and a desire to give something back by sharing our Dartmouth education.

Jefferson Junior High School is located on the waterfront in Southwest Washington at 7th Street and Maine Avenue. There is plenty of parking, both on the street and on the school grounds.

Tutors may come as often or as infrequently as they wish or as their schedules permit. They are not expected to show up every Saturday. We appreciate the many competing demands upon our Saturday mornings and consequently try to keep the program as flexible as possible for our tutors.

If you think you might have even a few Saturdays to spare, are interested in contributing directly to your community, and want a first-hand opportunity to work on one of the major problems facing American society today, please consider Alumni in the Schools.

Get involved. We can all but promise you an invaluable and rewarding experience that you will long remember.
